This course will present a brief overview the latest research on the effects of trauma on children, covering the range of emotional and behavioral disorders from attention deficit disorders, to depression, to conduct disorders, and their effects in the classroom. It will emphasize what educators can do to identify these disorders, assist children struggling with them, and support their social, emotional and academic success in the classroom. Participants will be able to 1.) identify underlying emotional and/or behavioral problems in children exposed to trauma; 2.) describe classroom-based interventions for working with children exposed to trauma; 3.) describe school-based interventions and models for assisting these children.

Information covered consists of an overview of descriptive statistics and theoretical and practical aspects of assessing learners with special needs. Tests used to assess intelligence, school achievement, aptitude, language development, and social and emotional adjustment of exceptional children will be reviewed. Procedural techniques for administration, scoring, and interpretation of a variety of norm referenced, criterion referenced, curriculum-based, and informal assessment are also covered. Class activities focusing on case study reviews and interpretation are a major component for the course. An Assessment Report and Remedial Plan are required in this course.
